The revolutionaries believed in self-government, voting rights, equal opportunities for advancement and prosperity, fairness in taxation and land ownership, religious freedom, advancement through skill and hard work, and a balanced distribution of funds. Prior to the Enlightenment, most people unquestioningly accepted life under an absolute monarchical government, which allowed special wealth and privileges to a select few, while the common mes suffered.
