Can I drive my car without using the clutch?

Someone told me that it is better for the car if you can shift between gears without using the clutch. I tried this the other day and it actually works but I am wondering if it is bad for my car. My mechanic says that my clutch will go soon so I am wondering if this could be a way to conserve it?
