Why is The Black cat by edgar allen poe in the story Stones by William Bell ?

I haven't read Bell's story "Stones", but Poe's story is about something (the cat) that the main character kills, but who "comes back" in the form of an overly developed sense of guilt in the murderer. Can you maybe make some like comparisons to "Stones"?
