Mr. White says he paid a "trifle" for the paw to Morris.Can anybody explain this section in Monkey's Paw?

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs. Mr. White says that Morris didn't want to take it,but he made him take it, but again he pressed him to throw it.What does this mean.Please help.
