Bank called me and said they might or might not cash the check?

I recently got a check for around 12k from old work and I deposited it and then 2 days later I got a call from the bank saying 'They may or not cash us' They havent told us or something along those lines? What does that mean? He said the bank basically didnt tell him if theyll cash it or not so thats why they cant pay
