Are pendant lights okay in a small kitchen with no table and no island?

I am remodeling my kitchen and not sure on the lighting. It is a fairly small kitchen with no island or table. I am thinking of doing recessed can lights but also would like something decorative in the center of the room. I like the pendant lights but don't know if they will okay not hanging over a counter, island or table.
